Conference Convener

CARMEN CHAN

Carmen is a third year medical student on a mission. After returning from her fifth medical conference, she was eager to bring one back to her medical school, and hometown of Auckland. Carmen was the Auckland Manager for P3 Foundation’s SEED Programme and played a crucial role in running a high school education programme for student development. Carmen also recently wore a T-shirt with her name on it for 365 days to raise money for the Kidney Kids Foundation. In her spare time, she’s known to be out in the bush, or practicing her beloved aikido.

Academic Convener

BRIAR MANNERING

Briar is in her fourth year of medical study at the University of Auckland. Originally from the Hawkes Bay, Briar has attended several local and international conferences. With a passionate interest in public and global health, she is scouting potential issues students will not only be interested in hearing about, but be keen to get involved with. She spearheaded NZMSA’s campaign on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and worked with IFMSA Asia-Pacific as a development assistant for advocacy, policy and education.

Head of Marketing and Review

ALISTAIR LOCK

Alistair is a third year medical student at the University of Auckland, with a previous Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Genetics from the University of Otago. Alistair is the academic sub-editor for the New Zealand Medical Student Journal, a position in which he has learned valuable marketing and review skills. These were used to provide inspiration towards his goal of making AUMSA Mobilise 2014 truly unforgettable. Outside of Medicine he tutors ESOL and is a keen soccer player, having participated in Auckland's 2013 NZMSA Sports Exchange’s winning team.

Head of Communications

BERNARD LIEM

Bernard is a fourth year medical student at the University of Auckland. His election in 2013 as the Secretary for AUMSA provided him plentiful administrative and organisation experience, as well as tremendous insight. Bernard was responsible for the annual membership drive, and for successfully organising the election of the 2014 AUMSA Executive. These skills were used throughout the efficient organisation of AUMSA Mobilise 2014. Outside of Medicine, Bernard is a chronic movie-goer and enjoys the occasional hit of tennis.

Social Convener

GREER JANSSEN

Greer is currently a third year medical student at the University of Auckland. She has experience from multiple committees, being a former prefect at Baradene College and her assistance in organising the premier social event of the 2013 medical year – the AUMSA ball. Here she developed invaluable communication and negotiation skills that aided her to produce a great social night for AUMSA Mobilize 2014. Greer wanted to take the 2014 AUSMA conference to the next level creating an event that was more accessible, enjoyable and affordable than ever before.

CHELSEA HEAVEN

Chelsea is currently a third year medical student at the University of Auckland. No stranger to securing funding, Chelsea has organised several sponsorship events both intra and extra-curricularly. She was a key member of her college development committee, and was involved with raising funds for her school, also securing sponsorship for their ball. A dedicated individual, with always time to add her hand to jobs when needed, she can always be relied on to get the job done.

Logistics Officer

HARRY YOON

Harry is a third year medical student at the University of Auckland. Before moving up from Hamilton, his role as Deputy Head Prefect for his school provided insight into co-ordinating large-scale events, most notably the week-long Centennial celebrations. His interest in health issues saw him elected as Secretary for Medical Students for Global Awareness (MSGA) in 2013. This year, he is applying his organisational skills as a Pre-clinical rep for YACMA. The know-how gained from these roles formed a solid base for his role in setting up a memorable AUMSA Mobilise 2014.

Treasurer

TERESA VANDERBOOR

Teresa is a fourth year medical student at the University of Auckland. A non-native of New Zealand, Teresa graduated in 2008 from the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada with the honour of highest graduating GPA in Psychology, with a minor in Biochemistry. Following University, she worked for a government branch akin to ACC, helping injured workers find new vocations. This work and life experience meant that Teresa was the perfect candidate for Treasurer of AUMSA Mobilise 2014. Outside of Medicine, she has notably ran the Auckland Marathon.

Food Sponsorship Officer

KATIE VAN RIJN

Katie is in her third year of medical school at the University of Auckland. Originally from Auckland, Katie is full of inspiration and is really excited to see this conference happening in her beloved city. Having been involved in raising funds through school groups, this was not the first time she had to secure aid for a team, however it was her first time in a role of food sponsorship officer so she loved the challenge it presented, and was a crucial member of the conference team.

Designer

HANNAH NG

Hannah is a second year medical student with a delightful attitude, always eager to help out. She has worked with the Optometry Department at the University of Auckland for the last five years, publishing a paper on the prevention of myopia progression. For this, she was awarded the Prime Minister’s Future Scientist Award, which took her to a number of inspirational international conferences. Hannah also works at the P3 Foundation as a Logistics Officer, and enjoys rock climbing, painting, music and dancing (in the dark!).

Academic Officer - Communications GERALD LEE

Gerald is an Auckland-born, third year medical student at the University of Auckland. The inspiration gained at his first conference, hosted by the P3 Foundation, compelled him to take on this responsibility. As a leader of multiple committees for his high school, and a writer at Tearaway; one of New Zealand’s longest-running youth magazines, he developed the liaison skills that made him an excellent candidate to be a reliable contact for AUMSA 2014’s keynote speakers. In his second life Gerald dreams of being a multi-genre music composer earning extra money through night time boxing.

JOEVY LIM

Joevy is a third year medical student at the University of Auckland. She attended both the RANZCP and NZMSA conferences in 2013, where she developed incentives for creating opportunities for other fellow medical students. Joevy loves to meet and connect with new people, especially hearing about and exchanging life experiences, thoughts and ideas. She has been described as an outgoing, approachable and friendly girl, ideal qualities to strengthen AUMSA Mobilise 2014. Outside of class she likes to go running and swimming, and gets lost in the occasional insightful book.

Academic Officer – Breakouts

STEVEN YOUNG

Steven is a third year medical student at the University of Auckland who is passionate about reducing global health inequities. An aspiring surgeon, he likes to think that if patients were food, he will be their Jamie Oliver. Chosen for his dedication to bring about change, he really enjoyed the position as it gave him an opportunity to bring about change in New Zealand. In his spare time he enjoys reading, especially Charlotte Bronte, although he shamelessly enjoys a bit of Jane Austen on the side. Steven quotes Dr. Suess as his inspiration.

Creative Competition Convener VISHAKHAM JOSEPH

Vishakham is a second year medical student at the University of Auckland, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and European Studies. She is passionate about promoting a balance of the sciences and arts in the practice of Medicine. Growing up in India, Christchurch and Whangarei contributed to her interest in global issues and the social determinants of health. She has been involved with the P3 Foundation and Youth Parliament, and completed a summer research project on Indigenous Law in 2013. Vishakham enjoys writing, hiking, d&m conversations and tea.

JUSTIN SUNG

Justin is a fourth year medical student at the University of Auckland, who is part of the marketing and design team for the conference. He likes to stay busy, with other current involvements including dancing in the Auckland Popping Community, being the Internship Director for Social Innovation: NZ, being a designer for the ACMA sub-committee, as well as an instructor for his Time Management and Efficiency Workshop. He has a passion for social change through empowering ambition, and enjoys gymming and martial arts, but not long walks!
