Political Panel
We are proud to present three of New Zealand's leading politicians in the field of health for the political panel at AUMSA Mobilise 2014. They will discuss how their parties can benefit medical students and the healthcare system in Auckland and nationwide.
This being election year, we offer you a vital opportunity to hear answers from New Zealand's three-major political parties.
Dr Paul Hutchison
National Party
Iain Lees-Galloway
Labour Party
Hon Kevin Hague
Green Party

Paul Hutchison was first elected to Parliament in 1999 with the National Party. He is the MP for the Hunua electorate, and chairs the Health Select Committee. He also sits on the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee. He gained an MBChB at Otago University, and has since worked as a Pathology Resident in the US, an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist in Britain and third world countries, and as a consultant at the National Women’s Hospital in New Zealand. He was also a founding member of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.
Iain Lees-Galloway is the Labour junior whip, and has been the MP for Palmerston North since 2008. He is the associate spokesperson for health and the spokesperson for ACC, and a member of the health select committee. He previously worked as campaigns and media advisor for the NZ Nurses' Organisation, was the former president of the Massey University Students' Association, and was the author of the Smoke-free Environments (Removing Tobacco Displays) Amendment Bill.
Kevin Hague is the Green spokesperson for Health, ACC, cycling, rainbow issues, sport and recreation, alcohol and other drugs and older persons. He first came to Parliament in 2008 after working as the CEO of the West Coast DHB. He has also previously worked as the CEO of the NZ AIDS foundation and chaired the NZ Public Health Advisory Committee, and is a past president of AUSA. He has done post-graduate study in public health, and decided to make the move into politics due to the looming threat of climate change.
