Dr Pat Alley is Director of Clinical Training for Waitemata District Health Board and Clinical Associate Professor in Surgery at the Auckland School of Medicine. He was the first New Zealander to be awarded the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils (CPMEC) Clinical Educator of the Year Award.

The Dermatology Interest Group hosts a 40 minute session focusing on leprosy, skin-
manifesting tuberculosis, scabies, and other dermatological conditions of relevance to third world societies.
There will be a semi-interactive, competitive quiz run with Dr. Paul Jarrett (Consultant Dermatologist CMDHB) and Dr Genevieve Walls (Infectious Disease Physician). Delegates will then engage in a Q & A session with the consultants, and earn prizes based on their outcome in the competition.

Join the Student Psychiatry Interest Network as we introduce the cornerstone of Psychiatry; The Axial Diagnosis. Making an Axis Diagnosis requires you to analyse every part of the psychiatric presentation and create a working summary that leads to a management plan. We break it down to an easily understandable level, and help you navigate the DSM manual. We’ll be using live case demonstrations in this interactive workshop, so come prepared to get involved!

The New Zealand Defence Force present Major Michael O'Reilly, chief medical officer for Burnham military camp. He will talk on the subject of 'future R2E (‘Role Two Enhanced’) deployable Health Capability – the future of Forward Surgical Teams in Aeromedical Evacuation and Combat Lifesaving'. This ties into the NZDFs new acquisition of modern tactical helicopters and is the main focus of most current defence health projects.

Paediatrics is often viewed as a discipline only concerned with children’s health. The Pediatric Interest Group attempts to break this mould, and this breakout will focus upon youth health in New Zealand.
The principle investigator of Youth ’07, Dr Simon Denny, will be speaking in this session, and will discuss youth health outcomes on a national and global level. The session will be interactive, with delegates given the opportunity to discuss and present proposals to improve youth health.

As medical students, we will inevitably be faced with daunting situations where independence will be demanded and we will feel ill-prepared. This is especially true in the surgical theatre!
Auckland University Surgical Society present an opportunity to empower ourselves by perfecting our surgical suturing techniques in an interactive, hands-on workshop. This session will be led by Dr Pat Alley (General Surgeon) and his team, who will demonstrate basic knot tying and subcuticular sutures.

Dr Michelle Wong presents a session describing the speciality of Otolaryngology, and how she came to love it!
A senior lecturer and alumni of Auckland Medical school, her post-graduate specialist training was completed in Sydney, Australia and Oxford, United Kingdom. She returned to New Zealand in 2010 to take a post as an Otolaryngologist at Auckland Hospital and has a private clinic on the North Shore.
She is passionate about providing a world class service here in Auckland.

Auckland University Sports Medicine Society present NZ Olympic Team, NZ Football and Silver Ferns physician Dr. Fulcher, leading an interactive discussion on sports medicine from an international and national perspective, seeing how the field has evolved, touching on his own career pathway that has led him to Olympic Games' and World Cups. We will practically learn about the place of injury prevention programmes in sport and the FIFA 11+ injury prevention programme, complete with FIFA giveaways.
Health Workforce NZ
Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean of the Auckland School of Medicine, Des Gorman speaks about the significance of sustainability in Medicine. He completed medical training in Auckland, and has served in both the Royal Australian, and Royal New Zealand Navies. Des is interested in diving medicine and brain injuries, and especially passionate about sustainability in health; pursuing this as both a member of ACC’s Board of Directors and the Executive Chairman of Health Workforce New Zealand.

Young Auckland Chinese Medical Assoc. present Dr Derek Luo, vice-president of ACMA (Auckland Chinese Medical Assoc.), co-founder of CHAINZ (Chinese Health Awareness Initiative New Zealand). He will discuss their initiatives; to reach out to the Chinese and Asian people of New Zealand. A Consultant Gastroenterologist at Middlemore Hospital, Derek specialised in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology in Auckland, and researched advanced therapeutic endoscopy at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Grassroots Rural Health Club present medical students that have undertaken exciting rural electives. Ben Waishing will speak about his amazing experiences in Tanzania, Caitlin Prendergast tells of her elective in the Cayman Islands, and Carrie Bryers will offer insight into her selective with the mobile surgical bus. Come with any selective/elective questions you may have.

RANZCOG is facilitating the creation of a new student group – Australia and New Zealand Obstetrics and Gynaecology Student Association. Dr Michelle Wise, an Obstetrics & Gynaecology consultant at Auckland hospital, is helping to establish ANZOGSS at Auckland Medical School. Listen to the current “hot topics” in O & G backed up by fascinating cases from Dr Wise’s clinical experience. Two student reps will detail ways that YOU can get involved, and advocate for Women’s health in New Zealand.

Poor Health: How inequality impoverishes healthcare.
This session will be discussion-based, intending to probe into the reality of healthcare in under-developed nations.
Jade Leung will draw on a few case studies, and will delve into the challenges faced in an under-resourced and often politically unstable healthcare system. She will illustrate the fundamental importance for the delegates to consider a collaborative approach to system leadership in healthcare and public sector reform.
Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceutical companies spend big on marketing: in America, in 2007 they spent $10-15,000 per doctor, per year on payments to doctors.
The ethics of these relations are criticized, many feeling that doctors are entering a conflict of interest. Does this impact the way doctors prescribe? Suzy McKinney procured HRC funding to conduct a independent research project about this topic, and will present upon the ethics of this relationship, discussing how young doctors can best manage it.
MSGA with Rennie Qin
This workshop shares Rennie’s experiences and learning in global health in the past four years, from the United Nations to hospitals in Nepal. ‘Global health’ is a buzz word that has emerged over the past 15 years. What exactly is global health, and what approaches to global health challenges can we take? How can future doctors best serve it? From statistics to political philosophy, this workshop will challenge the common myths, and clarify some possible career pathways in global health.
Sustainable Healthcare

Working as the Sustainability Officer at Counties Manukau Health has to be one of the best jobs ever! Counties Manukau Health is measuring its environmental impact and a management and reduction plan is now firmly in place. The presentation will provide an overview of sustainable healthcare practice before moving onto discussing how we have taken a pragmatic approach to greening our practice.
